Description:
The workshop will be given in two sessions. Session 1: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. Session 2: 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm)) ----- What does GMO really mean? Is it good or bad? How can we use small living organisms to find creative solutions to larger social problems? iGEM Uppsala to a workshop on the theme of synthetic biology and future solutions, where we will discuss these questions and much more! We also invite you to try out some practical laboratory elements and to think openly and creatively in a scientific environment. iGEM is an international competition in synthetic biology that brings together teams from universities around the world. The students themselves plan and carry out their experiments and design projects that will work towards the UN's global goals and contribute to positive and sustainable social development. This year's Uppsala team has chosen to work with microscopic green algae and their potential to be used as more environmentally and climate-friendly alternatives in industries such as water purification, biofuels and carbon storage. An important part of our project is to reach out to the public and discuss issues such as sustainable development, genetic modification, risks and opportunities in synthetic biology. We want to make research advances more accessible to the public and weave together nature, culture, science and society. But for this we need YOUR help! This workshop is aimed at those of you who are interested in biology, technology and science, but also those of you who have never heard of synthetic biology or GMOs. Everyone is welcome! The workshop will involve both information and discussion as well as more practical and creative exercises where you as a participant will get to try working with us. What are you waiting for? Bring your children, mom, dad, siblings, grandma, neighbor or colleague and join us in the lab! (Recommended age limit: from 8 yrs)
